
About Southern University and A&M College
The Southern University System includes five campuses located in Shreveport, New Orleans, and Baton Rouge. The campus in Baton Rouge is the main campus and is located in the northern section of the city overlooking the Mississippi River. The School of Nursing is on the Baton Rouge campus. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students comprising a cosmopolitan and diverse student body from throughout the United States, territories, and foreign countries. Southern University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
About The School of Nursing
The Southern University School of Nursing has as its major focus the preparation of professional nurses and the ongoing development and maintenance of an educational climate of relevancy inclusive of professional culture, research and standards of practice. The School provides three degree programs designed to uniquely and effectively contribute to the alleviation of current and future problems associated with the availability and delivery of quality nursing care.
BSN
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). The School of Nursing emphasizes self-care nursing concepts and the human care process in professional nursing. The school prepares its graduates to incorporate knowledge of nursing theory, physical sciences, behavioral sciences, and humanities in clinical nursing practice. Nationally recognized as one the largest producers of minority BSN graduates. The Baccalaureate Program graduated its first class of 14 students in 1988 and has 800 BSN graduates.MSN
The Master of Science Degree in Family Health Nursing is a two year program of advanced study that prepares graduates to assume leadership roles as administrators, educators or family nurse practitioners. The curriculum prepares graduates for the above by helping them design and implement nursing systems that take into account the values, beliefs, self-care practices, and dependent self-care of families experiencing family system deficits. The program is a member of The Intercollegiate Consortium for a Master of Science in Nursing Program (ICMSN) is a cooperative venture among four area Schools of Nursing. Each member institution in the ICMSN is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. The program began in 1992, added the nurse practitioner role in 1996 and now has 67 graduates. PhD The Ph.D. in Nursing is a research-oriented doctorate focusing on health issues of vulnerable women and children. The program will prepare scientists to conduct research that will extend the knowledge base that informs nursing education, nursing practice, and nursing leadership. The program admitted its first five students in the Fall 2001.
